"Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore" - Robin Sloan

"Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore" - Robin Sloan

Initial Response: Upbeat detective humor filled fun!

First Sentence: " Lost in the shadows of the shelves, I almost fall of the ladder." - Robin Sloan

From the Reader:

  • Part 1: I either love or hate rules, this book perfectly explains when rules must be broken. I am sure it was not written with that intent but it is what I took from it.
  • Part 2: I am a book lover, library haunter and book store explorer. What I am trying to say is that I loved everything this novel offered me. This book was a homage to how our literary world is changing, beautifully merging old book mysteries and our new technological advancements. The two different worlds were brought together with whit, humor, charm and an excellent array of characters that range from the odd to the outrageous. I sped through this book so naturally, at the end I even looked up coding, not for me but I was intrigued! Enjoy!

Best With: I enjoyed this with the Uber Duber from Bau Haus crafted here in Minneapolis. I enjoy this brewery for its location, colorful theme and the beer is great! Plus the beer can is such a spectacular design I had to use it!

Recommend to: Your favorite nerd friends, techies, younger and older brothers, strong female leads in your life, and anyone who loves a good detective story with some humor in it.

Ideal reading spot: Your trendiest local coffee shop or a privately owned bookshop, you choose, either will fit!

Category: I immediately put this into Pure Sunlight. The book is fresh, fun, whitty, upbeat and diverse. It is a great pick me up and guaranteed to make you smile. A well written book it will take you from ancient libraries to the campus of google, a literary adventure well worth it!

On the Pages: In the story we are taking on an adventure with Clay Jannon, who comes to work the night shift at Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore. While there he starts investigating the customers that frequent the shop, through this he is unintentionally thrown into a great literary mystery hundreds of years old. At the same time we are plunged into the world of top notch technology. With a wide assortment of characters and techniques you join the team on a story to suite all your bookish needs.

Finale: Be open minded, both for old and new. Look for fresh ideas and learn from the past simultaneously. With that balance you will find yourself more accessible. And sometimes you may need to break a few rules to get there!
